Artwalk, farmers market, theater, concerts, Milk Carton Derby, children’s theater in the parks, instrument petting zoo, charity ride and Greenwood Library renovation celebration in Phinney Ridge and Greenwood this weekend

So much to do in Phinney Ridge, Greenwood and beyond this weekend. Here are some highlights. Check our Events calendar for more.

Woodland Park Zoo closes at 3 p.m. Friday for its annual Jungle Party fundraisers. Visitors can stay on the grounds until 4 p.m.

Phinney Farmers Market is from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Friday in the upper parking lot of the Phinney Neighborhood Association, 6532 Phinney Ave. N. Fresh veggies, fruit, kimchi, bread, wine, cider, beer, flowers, pasta, ice cream and popsicles, plus several dining options, including pizza, tamales, grilled sandwiches, naan and more.

The monthly Art Up Artwalk is from 6-9 p.m. Friday at dozens of art galleries and other businesses throughout the neighborhood. Check out the Artwalk website for a complete list of all participating venues and artists, plus a map, and a list of restaurants with artwalk specials. Champion Wine Cellars will have live music by Josh Wong at 7:30 p.m., along with wine tasting. The Phinney Center Gallery hosts the opening reception for The Mural Project — Exhilarating Art By Vibrant People, from 7-9 p.m., featuring murals created by 200 people living with dementia and memory loss (the show will be up through Aug. 11).

Taproot Theatre, 204 N. 85th St., continues its production of “Persuasion.”

Couth Buzzard Books, 8310 Greenwood Ave. N., presents Murphy Rideout Middaugh in a Pacific NW Folklore Society concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday; and Little Sara and the Night Owls in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

One of the funnest Seafair events happens at Green Lake this weekend – the Milk Carton Derby. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., watch people race in homemade “boats” made from paper or plastic milk cartons. Some are elaborate, some very basic, and some float better than others.

Historic Olmsted walking tour of Green Lake Park from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, beginning at the Green Lake Community Center.

City Cycle, 117 NW 85th St., is hosting a charity ride for Seattle Humane at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Music Center of the Northwest will have an Instrument Petting Zoo from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Saturday at Carkeek Park.

The Greenwood Library celebrates its grand reopening after major renovation from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, with refreshments, music, remarks by Seattle Public Library Executive Director and Chief Librarian Marcellus Turner, a sing-along to “Follow Me to the Greenwood Library,” historic photos of Greenwood and neighborhood murals, and an interactive “What I love about the library” display. A special construction story time for toddlers is from 11-11:30 a.m., with construction workers in hard hats and vests.

Tambor e Cordas performs “world rhythmic music with a Brazilian jazz twist” at 7 p.m. Saturday at Luso Food & Wine, 8218 Greenwood Ave. N.

Nearby, Theater For Young Children is bringing its summer show to Ballard Commons and Salmon Bay parks this weekend and next. The Ballard Commons show is at 6 p.m. Friday and 12 p.m. Saturday. The Salmon Bay Park show is at 6 p.m. Friday, July 21, and 12 p.m. Saturday, July 22. Families are encouraged to bring blankets and a picnic to enjoy the free 45-minute show. (Suggested donations of $5 per person is you can.)

This summer’s show is Tales from the African Continent and features stories, games, and songs gathered from many countries and cultures. We perform the Tanzanian Folk Tale: Two Ways to Count to Ten and from West Africa: Why Mosquitos Buzz in People’s Ears. Our interactive storytelling allows children of all ages to participate by singing along to songs by famous Smithsonian Folkways artist, Ella Jenkins and join us on stage to play the Liberian children’s game Who is in the Garden.

Traffic-wise and other events around town this weekend:

  • About 10,000 cyclists will leave from the UW between 4:45-7:30 a.m. on Saturday for the Seattle to Portland Bike Ride.
  • 30th Annual Seafair Indian Days Pow Wow takes place Friday through Sunday at Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center, 5011 Bernie Whitebear Way, at Discovery Park, with music, dancing and food.
  • DragonFest in the Chinatown-International District will close South King Street between 5th Avenue South and 7th Avenue South from 12-8 p.m. Saturday and 12-6 p.m. Sunday.
  • Seattle Street Food Festival happens on 9th Avenue North between Thomas Street and Mercer Street Saturday and Sunday.
  • Seafair Bon Odori Festival at the Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple in the Central District Saturday and Sunday.
  • Washington State Department of Transportation will close the westbound SR 520 bridge between Bellevue and Montlake Boulevard Friday night to Monday morning.
  • WSDOT crews will open the I-5 southbound express lanes later than usual on Saturday and Sunday to perform bridge inspection work. The lanes will open by 11 a.m. each day instead of the usual 8 a.m.

Looking ahead to next Friday, July 21, the Greenwood Senior Center is hosting Around the World Luncheon Goes to Chile, with Chilean classical guitarist Alberto Cumplido, who is currently touring in Seattle, and will perform with local guitarist Hilary Field. Cost is $5.
