It’s the final weekend of “Evidence of Things Unseen” at Taproot Theatre, 204 N. 85th St.

If you listened to the Prairie Home Companion show in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s you certainly knew Claudia Schmidt, one of Garrison Keillor’s regular performers. She is ubiquitous, a folk, jazz and blues singer, poet, and multi-instrumentalist – she plays guitar, mountain dulcimer, and quirky instruments such as the pianola. Her work is “a quirky and wonderful hodge-podge (her word!) of music, poetry, story, laughter. drama, and celebrating the moment… what you get is a unique look at the world from someone who says what she sees with clarity, humor, and wonder.” Garrison Keillor said “when Claudia sings a song, it stays sung.”
The 3rd annual Art in Bloom hosts one site in our neighborhood at glass artist Karen Seymour’s studio at 5415 Greenwood Ave. N. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. At Seymour’s studio you’ll see outdoor art by five artists. The entire tour will showcase more than 20 artists at five North Seattle home studios that are not usually open to the public.
City Cyle’s soft opening begins Saturday at 117 NW 85th St., with their grand opening event next Saturday, May 6.
The Norse Home, 5311 Phinney Ave. N., is hosting its annual rummage sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Saturday is Independent Bookstore Day, with 19 bookstores in Seattle participating and offering special discounts and events. Phinney Books, 7405 Greenwood Ave. N., is open extended hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is hosting a full day of activities and discounts.
Seattle School Boardmember Scott Pinkham will meet with District I constituents from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Broadview Library, 12755 Greenwood Ave. N.
The Phinery home furnishings store officially opens for business at 6500 Phinney Ave. N. at 12 p.m. Saturday.
Seattle Folklore Society presents David Roth at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N., in the Brick Building. Tickets in advance are $16 general; $14 SFS/PNA members, seniors and students; kids are half price (all tickets are $2 more day of the show).
David Roth, our former Seattle neighbor, has written music that has traveled the world – and outer space!
Roth cemented his connection to the folk music community on the streets of Greenwich Village in the 1980s. Now in his 29th year of full-time music-making, Roth’s songs have found their way to Carnegie Hall, the United Nations, Chicken Soup for the Soul books, the Kennedy Center, the Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul, & Mary concerts, NASA’s Goddard Space Center (his song “Rocket Science” went up on the space shuttle Atlantis in 2009), and the “Rise Up Singing” songbooks. As former artist-in-residence at New York’s Omega Institute, Roth has taught singing, songwriting, and performance at the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina each summer, the Augusta Heritage workshops, Moab Folk Camp, and for many other songwriting groups. He has appeared at countless coffeehouses, conferences, concert halls, and festivals, and has 13 CDs to his credit.

- Southbound I-5 express lanes are closed Saturday and Sunday. Northbound express lanes will open by 1:30 p.m. each day.
- People’s Climate March from Occidental Park to Westlake Park via 4th Avenue starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
- Cruise Ship Season begins Saturday with increased traffic at Bell Street Pier 66 and Smith Cove Pier 91.
- Greenlake Food Walk festival will close NE 72nd Street between East Green Lake Drive North and Woodlawn Avenue NE between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday.
- Match for Africa tennis charity match at KeyArena featuring Rodger Federer vs. John Isner in support of children’s education in Africa, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
- Seattle Sounders vs. New England at 7 p.m. Saturday at CenturyLink Field.
- Top Pot Doughnut Dash around Green Lake starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
- And on Monday, a May Day Veteran Anti-War Formation begins at 8:45 a.m. from the Garden of Remembrance at 2nd Avenue and University Street; and the Annual May Day March for Workers and Immigrant Rights begins with a rally at 11 a.m. at Judkins Park followed by a march to Seattle Center at 1 p.m.
