PhinneyWood celebrates 8 years as your neighborhood news source

by | Jun 22, 2016

PhinneyWood.com is celebrating its eighth anniversary as the neighborhood news source for Phinney Ridge and Greenwood. In that time we’ve published more than 6,000 stories about everything from business and transportation issues to crime, breaking news, lost pets and interesting people. And that doesn’t include the thousands of events we’ve promoted through our free Events calendar.
Along the way we won a national journalism award for our breaking news coverage of the arson that destroyed four Greenwood businesses in 2009, and the made-up word “PhinneyWood” became a PLACE, not just a news site. Neighborhood real estate listings and advertisements now routinely use the term PhinneyWood to describe the neighborhood, as does our neighborhood’s monthly Art Up PhinneyWood artwalk and the PNA Business Group’s DoPhinneyWood.com website.
PhinneyWood is independently owned by Doree Armstrong and Dale Steinke (neighborhood residents for 20 years), but is part of the Next Door Media network for advertising (not to be confused with Nextdoor, a different company founded in California in 2010 which runs neighborhood forums in several states). Our partner sites are My Ballard, Queen Anne View, Fremont Universe, Magnolia Voice, Wedgwood View, Maple Leaf Life, My Wallingford and U District Daily.
PhinneyWood and each of our sister sites relies on advertising revenue as the sole source of income. Neighborhood and regional businesses can reach thousands of potential customers every day with ads targeted to specific neighborhoods. If you’re interested in advertising, please email our advertising manager, Jenni Sandmeyer, at [email protected]. (PNA Business Group members now receive 10 percent off advertising.)
Anyone can submit an item to our Events calendar. Just click here, fill out the info and click Submit Event. We’ll give it a quick proof before publishing. So if you’ve got a concert, play, open mic night, school event open to the public, kids crafting workshop, pet adoption event, etc., please use this free resource to get the word out.
And if you’ve got a news tip, please email us at [email protected]. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
Thank you to our wonderful community for all the news tips, photos and collaboration over the last eight years. We couldn’t do it without you!
