West Woodland third-graders to deliver supplies to Ballard Nickelsville on Friday

by | Jan 14, 2016

West Woodland Elementary third-graders are taking their social studies unit, Democracy in Action, to a new level. Tomorrow they’ll walk from the school at NW 56th Street and 4th Avenue NW to the Ballard Nickelsville homeless encampment at 28th Avenue NW and Market Street to deliver supplies they purchased with money they collected from the entire school.
Supplies include bottled water, socks, flashlights, hand warmers and protein bars.

The students are actively experiencing their social studies unit, Democracy in Action, which focuses on communities. They chose to study their own Ballard neighborhood and created maps with local businesses, landmarks, buildings and other locations. The kids even created characters and jobs in the community.
To extend their community learning, students opted to study the very real issue of homelessness in Ballard, focusing on Nickelsville.
