Fifteen students at Broadview-Thomson K-8 (north of Greenwood) are included in this year’s Writers in the Schools Anthology. Many of the students will be on stage at Benaroya Hall tonight (Tuesday) to read their work at the Seattle Arts & Lectures’ Writers in the Schools Anthology Reading & Celebration.
The Writers in the Schools Program (WITS) places professional local writers in public schools to develop writing skills and spark inspiration. Since 1994, the WITS program in the Seattle area has been helping students discover their own authentic voices. Featuring creative writing by students in last year’s program, this reading by 50 young authors will move the audience to tears, laughter, awe and wild applause.
This year’s anthology includes writing by Broadview Thomson K-8 School students Sumeya Abbas Kassim, Yeabsera Asmamaw, Jayne Astle, Maya Branch, Jade Buenavista, Roweda Damsa, Elizah DeMartini, Alexis Engman, Ava Furuness, Rose Gallagher, Connor MacLeod, Jonathan Reese Brown, Taitum Stevens, Ruby Strickland, and Selena Yeung.
The readings will take place in the Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall, beginning at 7 PM on September 23. The events are free and open to the public. The young authors will sign copies of the anthology, and a reception will follow, with sweets donated by Cupcake Royale.
Joel is asking for anyone who witnessed a bike accident on the Fremont Bridge at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11.

Car seats that have not expired and have not been in an accident will be donated to WestSide Baby for delivery to low income families who need them. Car seats that can’t be reused will be sent to Total Reclaim for disassembly and recycling. Each car seat contains about 15 pounds of rigid plastic and metal that can be made into something new. That means fewer valuable materials in the landfill and fewer greenhouse gases!
Joan tells us someone stole her Seahawk flag, including the pole, from the front yard of her house in the 300 block of 74th Avenue NW on Sept. 20-21. The flag is distinctive because the words were in a handwritten script. The thief also stole several solar-powered hummingbirds. Has anyone seen the flag or hummingbirds?
Kiley says someone stole an Amazon box off her porch at Greenwood Avenue North and North 59th Street last Wednesday morning. Anyone see anything?
The city is looking for candidates to fill seven positions on the new Seattle Park District Community Oversight Committee.
The Community Oversight Committee will provide advice to the Mayor, City Council and the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, as well as provide oversight of projects, programs and services undertaken by the City and the Seattle Park District.
The committee will meet quarterly to:
• Make recommendations on the allocation of the Major Projects Challenge Fund;
• Hold public meetings and make recommendations to update the next spending plan;
• Review the Department of Parks and Recreation Annual Report; and
• Provide the Mayor, City Council and Superintendent of Parks and Recreation with annual reports on the progress of expenditures and projects.The Committee will be composed of 15 members, seven members of the public (one from each Seattle district), four Board or Commission members to be recommended by Seattle City Boards & Commissions and four members from the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners. Each will serve either a one, two or three year term, to be determined during the selection process. The City seeks to appoint Community Oversight Committee members with a diversity of expertise and perspectives including, but not limited to parks management, public financing, urban horticulture, landscape architecture, contract management and the interests of low-income and communities of color. The Committee’s first official meeting will be held in April 2015, but members should be available to meet before this date, in early 2015.
