Honoring veterans

by | Nov 11, 2010

Thursday is Veterans Day, a national holiday to honor the men and women who have served our country.
Perhaps the largest celebration closest to our neighborhood is at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery at 11111 Aurora Ave. N. Boy Scout troops and other volunteers will begin putting flags at all veterans’ graves at 7 a.m. Music begins at 10:30 a.m. with the Eagles and Letter-Carriers Band. The Service of Remembrance begins at 11 a.m. Maria Kesovija will sing the national anthem; Chaplain Lt. Col. Kenneth Alford will give the invocation and benediction; and Major Gen. James. M. Collings Jr. will deliver the keynote address.
Metro bus service will be on a reduced service schedule, and there will be no service to the University of Washington.
The following businesses will be closed:

  • Banks
  • Post offices (and no mail delivery)
  • Seattle Public Library branches
  • Seattle Parks and Recreation facilities
  • Most government offices
