Food Bank needs kid-friendly foods for summer

by | Jul 15, 2010

Children who normally receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year are out of luck during the summer. The Greenwod Food Bank, part of the Volunteers of America Community Resource Center at 9041 Greenwood Ave. N., is in need of even more kid-friendly foods this time of year, such as peanut butter, juice boxes, and macaroni and cheese.
Here’s the most recent list of needs:

  • Canned meats (tuna, chicken, salmon)
  • Canned and boxed meals (soup, chili, stew, mac-and-cheese)
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned or dried beans and peas (black, pinto, lentils)
  • Pasta, rice, cereal
  • Canned fruits
  • Fruit juice (canned, plastic or boxed)
  • Shelf stable milk

Items that the food bank can’t accept include:

  • Rusty or unlabeled cans
  • Perishable items
  • Homemade items
  • Noncommercial canned or packaged items
  • Alcoholic beverages, mixes or sodas
  • Opened or partially used items

The Greenwood Food Bank serves more than 3,000 people every month. Food donations are accepted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Cash donations are especially helpful, as the food bank can use $1 to provide six meals.
