Sakya Monastery adds 32 prayer wheels outside

by | Jun 25, 2010

The prayer wheels outside Sakya Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism at 108 NW 83rd St. have long beenĀ a favorite of the PhinneyWood kid, and others who can’t pass by without spinning the wheels. The monastery’s Parinirvana Stupa, which is shaped likeĀ a bell, is circled by 32 prayer wheels.

Each wheel contains a scroll with a mantra of kindness and compassion, written 100,000 times. Passersby spin each wheel clockwise, which is said to “activate” the prayer.

Sakya recently added another 32 prayer wheels along the railing on the east side of the monastery.

Thanks to David for the tip! (Disclosure: Sakya is a PhinneyWood sponsor.)
