One of the five people killed in Fremont’s fatal apartment fire on Saturday was a kindergartener at Greenwood Elementary School.
The school confirms that 6-year-old Nisreen Shamam was one of the victims, and her younger brother, 5-year-old Yaseen Shamam, also a victim, would have been a student there in the fall.
School secretary Cheryl Kelly says the school will have counselors on hand today to help students cope with the tragedy. She says they also have a security guard who will be keeping the media away from grieving students.
The school’s Facebook page says they will be organizing some kind of memorial or fundraiser. Funds are also being accepted at the Red Door, 3401 Evanston Ave. N., in Fremont. You can pay your respects to the family at the Yesler Community Center, where the Ethiopian tradition of a week of mourning continues.
