Couth Buzzard to reopen Wednesday morning

by | Dec 15, 2009

The new incarnation of Couth Buzzard Books, along with in-house restaurant Espresso Buono Cafe, is opening at 7 a.m. Wednesday at 8310 Greenwood Ave. N. The cafe passed its restaurant inspection Monday, the final hurdle to opening.
We met Espresso Buono owner Penny Wight last Friday night at the Greenwood-Phinney Chamber of Commerce holiday party, and she told us how excited she was to be partnering with Couth Buzzard owners Theo Dzielak and Gerry Lovchik, saying they’d become as close as siblings in the less than six months that they’d known each other.
The old Couth Buzzard closed last year when Ken’s Market needed to expand into their space. The new Couth Buzzard Books Espresso Buono Cafe will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wight also owns the original Espresso Buono in Lynnwood.

The old Couth Buzzard was a Greenwood-Phinney Ridge institution, an eccentric, fun meeting place. We’ll continue that tradition, and more.
Do you think that we are crazy to open a used bookstore/cafe in the midst of a depression and a movement to the digital world of words? Well, we don’t think that we are. We recognize that bookstores and cafes are important “social network” places. A vanishing public sphere in our isolating world.
In addition to great books sold by seasoned booksters, Theo and Gerry, and great coffee and baked goods and sandwiches from Penny, we will open our doors to community groups, feature local artists, and offer regular entertainment on the weekends.
Come on by, bring your books, buy our books, give us your suggestions on how we can serve the community.
