Dr. Alejandro Grajal was recently named the new President and CEO at Woodland Park Zoo. He starts work on May 16. He is currently senior vice president for conservation, education and training at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

AmeriCorps is looking for 80 people to join its End Summer Hunger Campaign.

Corps members are assigned to one or more Summer Meals sites, and their job is to make a fun, safe and
engaging environment for kids. Members will plan and lead activities for kids and families and ensure that all rules for the Summer Meals program are being followed. This is the ideal opportunity to work with a cohort of 80 other End Summer Hunger Campaign Corps, engage with parents, kids, nonprofit leaders and community members on a daily basis, and do something meaningful this summer.

The requirements for this position include:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States
  • Must be available 40 hours a week for five days a week from June 20th, 2016 to August 26th, 2016
  • Cannot miss more than two days of the entire term of service. No exceptions can be made.
  • Must go through a Washington State Patrol background check

The 30th annual city-sponsored Spring Clean runs April through May. Residents can help pick up litter, stencil storm drains to protect salmon from polluted water, paint out graffiti, and remove invasive plants from planting strips and traffic circles Seattle Public Utilities will provide volunteers with free litter bags, gloves, safety vests and waste disposal. All projects are conducted on public property. Call 206-233-7187 or register online.

King County is asking for input on initiatives that will be funded by the voter-approved Best Starts for Kids. The community meeting closest to our neighborhood will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, at Northgate Community Center, 10510 5th Ave. NE.

Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board is looking for new members. The volunteer board helps implement Seattle’s Bicycle Master Plan.

The board advises the Mayor and City Council, participates in planning and project development, evaluates policies and makes recommendations to all city departments including the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Board members serve a two-year term, with an opportunity to serve a second term. Current members represent all types of bicycle riders and skill levels, from casual weekend riders to year-round commuters. The board meets the first Wednesday of each month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Seattle City Hall.

The 2016 Community Resource Exchange on April 6 at CenturyLink Field will provide a hot meal and essential services to the homeless, including dental checks, haircuts, new shoes and socks, and personal hygiene items. The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. No registration is required.

Shakespeare’s First Folio is at the Central Library downtown through April 17. This nearly 400-year-old book collected 36 of Shakespeare’s plays seven years after his death. Eighteen of those plays were not published elsewhere and may have been lost if not for this folio, published in 1623. A Third Folio, published in 1663, is also on display. Admission requires a free timed ticket, which can be ordered online.
