Lead a neighborhood walk as part of the international Jane’s Walks on May 4-5

by | Apr 18, 2013

Feet First is looking for volunteers to lead neighborhood walks throughout the city on May 4-5 as part of Jane’s Walks.

Jane’s Walk is a worldwide event to celebrate the work and ideas of urbanist Jane Jacobs by getting people out exploring their neighborhoods and meeting their neighbors. Free walking tours held on the first weekend of May each year are led by locals who want to create a space for residents to talk about what matters to them in the places they live and work.

Jane’s Walks highlight the great, unique, and interesting parts of a community while also addressing neighborhood issues in a positive and creative way.

In addition to walks led by Feet First’s Neighborhood Walking Ambassadors, we are encouraging community members to lead walks that weekend. There are only two rules: walks should be taken and given for free, and they should be walking conversations. The rest is entirely up to the walkers, and the conversation topics are as varied as the people taking part, from art and architecture to potholes and shortcuts and from video surveillance to the urban forest: anything that helps you and others better understand our cities and neighborhoods as places and spaces.

Feet First currently has 11 walks scheduled, including one in Ballard and one in Fremont. Anyone ready to lead one for Phinney Ridge and/or Greenwood? If so, you can sign up online.
