Greenwood Avenue will close to cars for Friday night’s annual Summer Streets

by | Aug 8, 2012

The fourth annual PhinneyWood Summer Streets event will close down Greenwood Avenue from 67th to 87th streets on Friday night from 6-10 p.m. Thousands of people are expected to stroll the street, meeting up with friends, playing children’s games and activities, checking out the monthly Art Up Artwalk, taking part in a blind coffee tasting, listening to live music and watching art being created.

The intersection of 76th and Greenwood was a popular place during last year’s Summer Streets.

There are way too many events to post them all here, but you can check out the Summer Streets Facebook page, and see a poster with a list of all events. Here are highlights of a few events.

Woodland Park Zoo will have a table around North 77th Street. The zoo has hidden stuffed pigs in neighborhood businesses. Find them and be entered to win prizes.

The Greenwood Food Bank will construct a giant food pyramid from canned goods in Ken’s Market parking lot at 73rd and Greenwood. Please bring a can or two of food to help the cause. And if you can help out building the canned food pyramid, please contact Alice at [email protected] or 206-782-6731.

Food bank volunteers also will be selling entry forms for this year’s Gumshoe 5K Walk, a neighborhood scavenger hunt, which runs through Sunday. Pick up your $20 entry form, follow the 30 clues around the neighborhood, and be entered to win prizes from neighborhood businesses.

Naked City Brewery and The Yard are holding a soccer tournament in front of Naked City at 8564 Greenwood Ave. N. Sixteen teams (92 players total) will compete in the Fun and Pro divisions in a 3-on-3 format of 20-minute games. Former Seattle Sounders player and Golazo (a natural energy drink) spokesperson Santa Maria Rivera will be the celebrity referee. Hollow Earth Radio’s DJ Dave Newman will spin records live on Greenwood Avenue during the games.

The second annual “Coffee Taste Off” will pit neighborhood coffee shops against each other in a blind taste test. The Coffee Taste Off will be set up across the street from Tasty, 7513 Greenwood Ave. N. (If any neighborhood coffee shops haven’t already been contacted about this, please email Jeff Cornejo from Phinney Ridge Starbucks at [email protected]).

A neighbor named Samantha will be collecting used jeans, bed linens, baby clothing, and ladies shirts to turn into bags and stuffed toys for her company “Reinvented.” She’s looking for items that are in decent condition, but may have a stain or rip so they can’t be donated to a thrift shop. She’ll have a booth with a green canopy somewhere between 85th and 87th.

Santoro’s Books is hosting a book signing with Jess Thomson, author of “Pike Place Market Recipes: 130 Delicious Ways to Bring Home Seattle’s Famous Market.”

Cookbook author Jess Thomson has prowled the Market’s stalls, shops, restaurants, and purveyors to assemble 80 wonderful recipes that express all of the flavors of the Pike Place Market. Included here are Le Pichet’s Salade Verte, Etta’s Mini Dungeness Crab Cakes by Tom Douglas, and the Pink Door’s Linguine alla Vongole. The author has also created recipes that are inspired by ingredients found at the market, such as Spanish Chickpea and Chorizo Stew (with Uli’s Sausage) and a MarketSpice Tea Cake. The author is so well versed in the market that her cookbook can also serve as a guide to the specialty shops and off-the-beaten path purveyors and cafes.

The Phinney Farmers Market is hosting the annual Phinney Phruit Phestival, with special tastings of stone fruits, beginning at 4:30 p.m., and a pie baking contest that starts at 5 p.m. Email [email protected] to sign up (and be sure to use farmers market fruit or berries in your pie). Pies will be judged by Chris Porter, The Pie Guy from A La Mode Pie, and food blogger Leslie Kelly.

The amazing acrobats from Versatile Arts will perform between 75th and 77th streets; the Bubbleman will be in front of Metropolis at 6:30 p.m.; Engine 21 will be out in front of Fire Station 21; A-1 Pianos will have pianos in the street for passersby to tickle the ivories; a kids’ bike parade starts at 6:30 p.m. in the 80th to 85th street zone, and ends down between 72nd and 75th; American Dance Institute will have dance performances and free lessons near 80th Street; and Urban Youth Chess Games will happen from 6:30-9:30 in the 80th to 85th block.

Metro bus routes 5, 48 and 355 will be rerouted during the events. Check out Metro’s online Alerts page for revised routes.
